Cobra Killer

Abrasive Berlin electroclash that pairs digital hardcore aggression with a playful, anarchic spirit. Distorted beats for messy nights and basement revolutions.

Intro

Cobra Killer sounds like a high-voltage short circuit in a Berlin nightclub. It is the sonic equivalent of a DIY punk show where the guitars have been replaced by malfunctioning samplers and overdriven drum machines. The music is loud, confrontational, and deeply rooted in the 'digital hardcore' aesthetic, yet it carries a distinct sense of humor and performance art flair that sets it apart from its more somber contemporaries.

What makes them truly distinctive is the chemistry between Gina V. D'Orio and Annika Trost. Their vocal delivery ranges from bored, deadpan cool to frantic, distorted shouting, often layered over chaotic loops that feel like they might fall apart at any second. They managed to bridge the gap between the militant noise of Alec Empire's circle and the fashion-forward irony of the early 2000s electroclash scene without losing their grit.

Start with the album '76/77' to hear them at their most refined yet explosive. It captures the essence of their 'red wine and chaos' stage presence while delivering some of their most infectious, albeit noisy, rhythmic hooks. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who likes their electronic music with a heavy dose of punk attitude.

The Cobra Killer duo of Gina V. D'Orio and Annika Trost began as part of Alec Empire's Digital hardcore movement. Both were part of other bands signed to Empire's Digital Hardcore Recordings label—D'Orio was in EC8OR, and Trost was in Shizuo. When Empire's label cut back on its bands, many of the DHR groups folded, but D'Orio and Trost kept going. They have released four albums and are currently on the Monika Enterprise label. Cobra Killer played with Sonic Youth and collaborates with many international artists. Peaches played her first gig as support act of Cobra Killer in Berlin.
