Circus Maximus

Formed in Oslo in 2000, Circus Maximus emerged as a premier force in the second wave of progressive metal. While their early work, notably 'The 1st Chapter,' displayed a clear lineage from Dream Theater and Symphony X, they quickly established a unique identity by integrating AOR-style melodic hooks and a more 'modern' rhythmic approach.

The band's technical foundation is built on the interplay between the Haugen brothers (drums and guitar) and the sophisticated keyboard arrangements of Lasse Finbråten. Their 2007 release 'Isolate' is widely considered a landmark of the genre, praised for its impeccable production and tight songwriting. Over time, the band shifted toward a more atmospheric and groove-heavy sound on 'Nine' and 'Havoc,' moving away from pure shredding toward complex emotional textures. They occupy a specific niche in the Norwegian scene, favoring 'clean' and 'bright' aesthetics over the region's more famous black metal exports.
