Cipher System

Cipher System is a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in 1996, though they solidified their identity in the early 2000s. They are a key example of the 'post-Gothenburg' sound, which took the foundations laid by At The Gates and In Flames and added a layer of modern production and electronic experimentation.

Their debut full-length, 'Central Tunnel Eight' (2004), recorded at the legendary Studio Fredman, established them as technical masters of the genre. After a significant hiatus and lineup changes, including the addition of vocalist Andreas Solveström, they released 'Communicate the Storms' in 2011, which is widely considered their magnum opus. Their sound identity is defined by high-tempo tremolo picking, synchronized double-bass drumming, and a prominent use of synthesizers to create a cold, atmospheric texture. Critically, they are respected for maintaining the intensity of death metal while embracing the 'cleaner' production standards of the 2010s metalcore and alternative metal scenes. They occupy a niche for listeners who appreciate the technicality of Swedish metal but desire a more futuristic, polished sonic palette.
