Intro

Christine Lavin creates a sound that feels like a long, engaging conversation with a particularly clever friend. Her music is rooted in the classic folk tradition of a single voice and an acoustic guitar, but she elevates it with a sharp, journalistic eye for the absurdities of modern life. One moment she is skewering social trends with surgical precision, and the next she is delivering a devastatingly simple line about the quiet ache of a fading relationship.

What truly sets Lavin apart is her unique blend of humor and intellectual curiosity. She is perhaps the only folk singer to successfully integrate themes of astrophysics and planetary science into her repertoire without losing the human element. Her delivery is conversational and warm, making even her most satirical tracks feel inclusive rather than mean-spirited. It is music that demands you listen to the words, rewarding your attention with both punchlines and profound insights.

For those new to her work, starting with her late 80s and early 90s output like 'Future Fossils' or 'Attainable Love' provides the perfect entry point. These albums showcase her ability to pivot between the hilarious and the heartbreaking, establishing her as a central figure in the contemporary folk revival. It is the ideal soundtrack for a quiet morning or a reflective evening when you want music that is as smart as it is soothing.

Christine Lavin (born January 2, 1952) is a New York City–based singer-songwriter and promoter of contemporary folk music. She has recorded numerous solo albums, and has also recorded under the name Four Bitchin' Babes with three bandmates. She is known for her sense of humor, which is expressed in both her music and her onstage performances. Many of her songs alternate between comedy and emotional reflections on romance. Lavin worked at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, New York, until Dave Van Ronk convinced her to move to New York City and make a career as a singer-songwriter. She followed his advice and accepted his offer of guitar lessons. She was the original host of Sunday Breakfast on WFUV in New York City and a founding member of the Four Bitchin' Babes when they were formed in 1990. She is a lifelong astrophysics hobbyist and has included those themes in her music.
