High-energy Afro-Colombian fusion that blends Pacific coast marimba rhythms with sleek urban hip-hop. Vibrant, proud, and built for the biggest speakers you can find.
ChocQuibTown sounds like a massive block party where tradition and the future are in a constant, joyful conversation. Their music is anchored by the heavy, organic swing of Afro-Colombian percussion - think congas, timbales, and the woody resonance of the marimba - but it is polished with the sharp, aggressive edge of modern hip-hop and reggaeton production. It is bright, brassy, and undeniably rhythmic.
What makes them truly distinctive is the vocal chemistry between Goyo, Tostao, and Slow. Goyo’s soulful, commanding singing provides a melodic center that balances the rapid-fire, rhythmic delivery of the rappers. Unlike many of their contemporaries who lean purely into electronic pop, ChocQuibTown maintains a 'live' feel, often incorporating full brass sections and traditional coastal rhythms that give their sound a grounded, regional soul.
Start with the anthem 'Somos Pacífico' to understand their roots and regional pride, then move to 'De Donde Vengo Yo' for the perfect blend of social consciousness and dancefloor energy. If you want their more polished, pop-leaning sound, 'Hasta el Techo' is the essential gateway.
ChocQuibTown (sometimes written as Choc Quib Town) is a Colombian hip-hop group that fuses various musical genres. Although the band formed in Cali, the members are originally from the Colombian department of Chocó. The group consists of Carlos "Tostao" Valencia (rapping), Gloria "Goyo" Martínez (singing and rapping), and Miguel "Slow" Martínez (production and rapping). The band's music draws influence from a wide variety of modern genres including hip-hop and more recently electronica, combined with traditional Colombian genres including salsa, Latin jazz, and Afro-Latin rhythms. After growing up in Chocó and forming in Cali, the ChocQuibTown relocated to Bogotá and gained popularity performing in the city's bars. The group's first two albums, Somos Pacífico (2006) and Oro (2010) were bolstered by the singles "Somos Pacífico" and "De Donde Vengo Yo", with the latter song winning a Latin Grammy in 2011. The band's third album, Eso Es Lo Que Hay (2011) experienced further success, featuring the single "Hasta el Techo", followed by El Mismo (2015). The group's latest album, Sin Miedo, was released in 2018.
