Chinaski

Chinaski is one of the most commercially successful and culturally significant Czech bands of the post-1989 era. Formed in 1987 (originally as Starý Hrady), they evolved from a garage-rock outfit into the definitive pop-rock institution of the Czech Republic.

Their sound identity is built on a foundation of melodic guitar rock, characterized by high production values and the relatable, narrative-driven songwriting of frontman Michal Malatný. Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, they dominated the Czech charts, winning multiple Anděl Awards (the Czech equivalent of the Grammys) and consistently ranking at the top of the Český slavík popularity polls. Their career arc is marked by a transition from the raw energy of the 1995 self-titled debut to the polished, stadium-ready anthems of '07' and beyond. Despite significant lineup changes in 2017, the band maintained its cultural position by leaning into a more mature, refined pop sound. They are often compared to peers like Lucie or Kryštof, but Chinaski is distinguished by a specific brand of everyman nostalgia and a less experimental, more direct emotional resonance. They remain a staple of Czech radio and a primary influence on the subsequent generation of Central European pop-rock acts.
