Hyper-literate indie pop that pairs Ivy League wit with Neptunes-approved production. Clever, melodic, and endlessly catchy songs for the modern intellectual.
Chester French sounds like a collision between a 1960s pop masterclass and the experimental hip-hop production of the mid-2000s. It is bright, colorful music that feels meticulously constructed, featuring soaring melodies, lush string sections, and crisp, modern drum programming. There is a distinct sense of 'musicality' here that feels both academic and deeply fun, like a group of prodigies deciding to write the perfect radio hit.
What truly sets them apart is their playful, often ironic perspective. They lean into a 'neo-sixties' aesthetic but filter it through a lens of digital-era cynicism and humor. D.A. Wallach’s vocals have a smooth, almost theatrical quality that can shift from sincere crooning to sharp satire in a single verse, while Max Drummey’s arrangements provide a dense, maximalist backdrop that rewards repeat listens.
Start with 'Love the Future' to hear the full realization of their dorm-room-genius era. It captures that unique moment in the late 2000s when the boundaries between indie, hip-hop, and classic pop were being gleefully dismantled by artists who were as obsessed with Brian Wilson as they were with Pharrell Williams.
Chester French was an American indie pop band consisting of lead vocalist and songwriter David-Andrew 'D.A.' Wallach, and multi-instrumentalist Maxwell Drummey. They met as college students at Harvard University, naming their band after sculptor Daniel Chester French, who designed the statue at the Lincoln Memorial, the John Harvard statue, as well as the Minuteman statue at the Lexington/Concord battlegrounds in Massachusetts. Milwaukee-raised Wallach and Boston native Drummey formed the band with three other classmates, playing various campus functions, and ultimately moved in a direction influenced by classic British Northern Soul. Wallach handled most of the vocals, while Drummey performed much of the composition with instruments, supplemented with an occasional special guest.
