Formed in Austin, Texas in 1991, Cherubs are a foundational pillar of the American noise rock underground. The trio, consisting of Kevin Whitley, Owen McMahon, and Brent Prager, emerged from the same 'LSD punk' milieu that birthed the Butthole Surfers, sharing a penchant for sonic terror and psychedelic absurdity.
Their early work on the Trance Syndicate label defined a specific brand of high-frequency, red-lined aggression that contrasted with the lower-tuned sludge of their contemporaries. Their 1994 album, Heroin Man, is a landmark of the genre, noted for its extreme distortion and Whitley's signature high-pitched vocal delivery. After a long hiatus starting in the mid-90s, the band returned in 2014, eventually signing to Relapse Records. Their later work maintains the signature 'jackhammer' rhythm and abrasive textures while incorporating a slightly more polished, yet still punishing, production style. They remain a primary influence on the modern 'sludge-noise' crossover scene, bridging the gap between art-damaged punk and heavy metal.
