Polished, high-fidelity funk that bridges the gap between London art-rock and New York disco. Sophisticated grooves for late nights and neon-lit city streets.
Chaz Jankel creates a sound that is both impeccably tailored and irresistibly funky. It is the sound of a master musician stepping out from the shadows of a legendary band to indulge in his own obsession with the groove. The music feels expensive and precise, yet it carries a playful, almost mischievous British wit that keeps it from ever feeling sterile. It is high-definition disco for people who appreciate the architecture of a song as much as the beat.
What truly sets Jankel apart is his ability to blend the gritty, rhythmic urgency of the Blockheads with a sleek, transatlantic sheen. You can hear the influence of early 80s New York club culture, but it is filtered through a sophisticated European lens. His use of synthesizers is never cold; instead, they provide a warm, liquid foundation for his signature staccato guitar work and those unmistakable, driving basslines that demand movement.
Start with his self-titled 1980 debut or the hit-heavy Questionnaire. These records capture the exact moment where post-punk experimentation met the high-gloss production of the disco era. It is the perfect soundtrack for when you want music that is smart enough for a deep listen but energetic enough to power a night out.
