Centr

Gritty, melancholic Moscow boom bap defined by dusty piano loops and raw stories of urban survival. The definitive sound of mid-2000s Russian underground rap.

Intro

Centr sounds like the gray, sprawling outskirts of Moscow in late November. Their music is built on a foundation of classic boom bap, but it is stripped of any American bravado, replaced instead by a distinctly Russian sense of fatalism and weary observation. The beats are often skeletal, relying on haunting piano samples and dusty drum breaks that feel like they were unearthed from a forgotten attic. There is a persistent chill in the production that mirrors the lyrical themes of cold streets and colder realities.

What truly distinguishes the group is their delivery and vocabulary. The three core members - Guf, Slim, and Ptakha - pioneered a specific 'deadpan' flow that became the blueprint for a generation of Russian rappers. They replaced traditional rap aggression with a conversational, almost bored tone that makes their stories of drug addiction and urban decay feel terrifyingly casual. Their use of hyper-local slang and specific Moscow landmarks created a sense of place so strong it felt documentary in nature.

For those new to the group, the debut album Kacheli is the essential entry point. It captures the trio at their creative peak, blending Guf's unique nasal storytelling with Slim's atmospheric, sample-heavy production. It is music for the quiet hours of the night when the city feels both massive and suffocatingly small.

Centr (Russian: Центр) is a Russian hip hop group formed in Moscow, Russia. Originally composed of Guf, Princip aka Prince, Slim aka Slimus, Ptaha aka Zanuda. In 2008 the group was the winner of the MTV Russia Music Award for Best Hip Hop Project. The group Centr is the founder of the «ЦАО Records» label. After Guf left Centr in 2009, rumours about the group's breakup began to appear. In 2010 at the “Russian Street Awards” the category for the "Biggest Hip-Hop Event of the Year" in Russia, "the Collapse of the group Centr" was chosen. From 2009 - 2012, the group included just Slim and Ptaha. In 2014, after a 5-year hiatus, it was announced that the group would be re-established. On May 14, 2016, the group played their last show in Frankfurt am Main, Germany and officially announced their disbandment. All of the members of the group continue to release solo projects.
