Catfish Haven

Soulful, gravel-throated rock that hits like a shot of whiskey. It is the sound of a Chicago basement show where the heart is worn directly on the sleeve.

Intro

Catfish Haven sounds like the intersection of a Motown 45 and a gritty punk demo. George Hunter’s voice is the centerpiece, a raspy, soulful instrument that sounds like it has been cured in tobacco and heartbreak. The music is propulsive and lean, stripped of any unnecessary studio polish to let the raw emotion of the songwriting breathe. It is music that feels lived-in, capturing the specific warmth of analog recording and the urgency of a live performance.

What truly distinguishes them is the 'indie soul' label they helped define in the mid-2000s Chicago scene. While their peers were leaning into synth-pop or intricate math-rock, Catfish Haven looked backward to Sam Cooke and Creedence Clearwater Revival, but played that influence with the aggressive, unrefined energy of the punk bands they grew up in. This creates a unique tension: the songs have the melodic bones of classic soul but the skeletal, distorted execution of garage rock.

Start with the album 'Tell Me' to hear them at their most essential. It captures the trio's ability to turn simple arrangements into massive, emotional crescendos. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who loves the grit of The Hold Steady but wishes they had a bit more Otis Redding in their record collection.

Catfish Haven is an indie rock band from Chicago, currently signed to Secretly Canadian Records. Their music was described by The A.V. Club writer Kyle Ryan in 2006 as "Creedence Clearwater Revival meets Nirvana". Ryan goes on in the same article to explain that "Because [Catfish Haven] grew up playing punk, they mostly avoid acoustic-rock conventions by channeling punk’s aggression and intensity. Few similar bands match the racket Catfish Haven makes, but few bands mix elements of folk, country, rock, and punk so well." They released their debut EP, Please Come Back, in 2006. Insound described it as "akin to guitarists/vocalists like Bruce Springsteen and John Fogerty". It was followed by their debut album, Tell Me.
