Casablanca

High-octane Swedish hard rock with a theatrical 70s soul. Big riffs, bigger hooks, and a touch of glam swagger for late nights and long drives.

Intro

Casablanca sounds like the best parts of 1974 filtered through modern Swedish precision. It is a high-voltage collision of classic glam rock swagger and the muscular crunch of early heavy metal. The guitars are thick and harmonized, the drums are punchy and relentless, and the vocals possess that specific raspy charisma that demands a stadium-sized stage. It feels like a celebration of rock's most decadent era without ever feeling like a museum piece.

What truly sets them apart is their pedigree and polish. As a supergroup of sorts, they bring a level of technical tightness that most revivalist bands lack. You can hear the influence of theatrical rock in their more ambitious tracks, especially on their concept album work, where they trade simple party anthems for more complex, atmospheric storytelling. It is music that is both gritty and sophisticated, balancing sleaze with genuine musicality.

Start with their debut album, Apocalyptic Youth. It captures the band at their most immediate and infectious, particularly on tracks like 'Downtown' and 'Love and Desperation.' If you want something a bit heavier and more focused, move on to Riding a Black Swan, which leans harder into the guitar-driven grit that defines the modern Swedish rock scene.

Casablanca is a Swedish rock band with members from several other notable groups: Josephine Forsman from the Sahara Hotnights (drums), Erik Stenemo from Melody Club (guitar), Anders Ljung from Space Age Baby Jane (vocals), Ryan Roxie from Roxy 77 (guitar), Mats Rubarth who previously played football professionally for AIK (bass), and Erik Almström from Bullet (guitar). The band released three albums: their debut album Apocalyptic Youth in 2012, Riding a Black Swan in 2014, and concept album Miskatonic Graffiti in 2015. In the final of Melodifestivalen 2010 they performed the 2009 winning song La Voix along with 2009 winner Malena Ernman. Later in the year they released the single Downtown.
