Cardinal was a short-lived but highly influential collaboration between Australian songwriter Richard Davies (formerly of The Moles) and American multi-instrumentalist Eric Matthews. Formed in 1994, the duo's sound was a radical departure from the prevailing grunge and alternative rock trends of the time.
They are credited with spearheading the 'chamber pop' revival, blending indie-pop sensibilities with the sophisticated, orchestral arrangements of late-1960s baroque pop. Davies provided the core melodic and lyrical framework, while Matthews acted as the architect of the sound, utilizing his classical training to arrange complex brass and string sections. Their self-titled 1994 debut was a critical darling but internal friction led to a quick dissolution. They briefly reunited for the album 'Hymns' in 2012. Their influence is visible in the work of artists like The High Llamas, Belle and Sebastian, and Fleet Foxes, who adopted similar orchestral textures in an indie context.
