Intro

Cameo, led by the enigmatic Larry Blackmon, represents one of the most successful evolutions in funk history. Originally formed as the New York City Players in 1974, the group began as a 14-piece horn ensemble heavily influenced by the psychedelic funk of Parliament-Funkadelic.

However, as the 1980s approached, Blackmon radically streamlined the group, eventually settling into a core trio. This shift coincided with a move toward electronic instrumentation, specifically the LinnDrum and various synthesizers, which resulted in a signature 'lean' funk sound that became a blueprint for the era's R&B. Their 1986 album 'Word Up!' solidified their place in the pop pantheon, blending rock-influenced guitars with electro-funk. Critically, they are recognized for their longevity and their ability to stay ahead of production trends, influencing the 'New Jack Swing' movement and providing a massive sample library for 90s hip-hop. Their cultural position is defined by a mix of high-concept visual camp and uncompromising rhythmic discipline.
