High-octane horror punk that pairs B-movie grit with massive, melodic hooks. Think Misfits energy met with a polished, dark rock swagger for midnight drives.
Calabrese sounds like the intersection of a 1950s drive-in theater and a sweaty 2000s punk basement. Their music is built on a foundation of driving, down-stroked guitar riffs and a rhythm section that never lets up, but it is elevated by a surprising sense of melody. There is a distinct 'spookiness' that is fun rather than truly terrifying, leaning into the camp and theater of classic horror cinema.
What sets them apart is the vocal interplay and the brothers' ability to blend the raw aggression of punk with the smooth, almost Elvis-like crooning found in psychobilly. While many horror punk bands rely on lo-fi grit, Calabrese often opts for a punchy, polished production that makes their choruses feel huge. It is music that celebrates the macabre with a wink and a grin, prioritizing catchy songwriting over pure shock value.
Start with '13 Halloweens' to hear the definitive blueprint of their sound. It captures the essential balance of their early energy and thematic focus. From there, move to 'Flee the Light' to hear how they evolved into a more muscular, hard-rock influenced beast while keeping their monster-movie soul intact.
Calabrese is an American rock band that is based out of Phoenix, Arizona. The band originally consisted of three brothers; bassist/vocalist Jimmy Calabrese, guitarist/vocalist Bobby Calabrese and drummer Davey Calabrese. In 2022 Jimmy left the band and was subsequently replaced by Argyle Goolsby, best known as the frontman of Blitzkid. Calabrese has been described as "Melodic, hook-laden, catchy, fun, Rock with a Punk attitude”. They have cited other bands such as the Damned, Alkaline Trio, Black Flag, Black Sabbath, Turbonegro, the Misfits, the Hives, White Zombie/Rob Zombie, AFI, Danzig, Type O Negative, and the Ramones as influences.
