Hyper-kinetic math rock that pairs jagged, frantic drumming with surprisingly sweet melodic detours. High-velocity music for restless minds.
bygones is a collaborative project between two pillars of the California experimental rock scene: drummer Zach Hill (Hella, Death Grips) and guitarist Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos). Formed in 2009, the duo represents a pinnacle of the 'Sargent House' sound, characterized by extreme technical proficiency, rhythmic displacement, and a disregard for traditional genre boundaries.
Their debut full-length, 'by-', is a landmark of the math rock genre, blending Hill's explosive, polyrhythmic drumming with Reinhart's innovative use of effects pedals and tapping techniques. The project is notable for its 'math pop' sensibilities, where complex structures are anchored by melodic vocal lines. However, their follow-up EP, 'Spiritual Bankruptcy', pivoted sharply toward lo-fi noise rock and 90s-style hardcore, demonstrating a restless creative spirit. Critically, bygones is viewed as a bridge between the pure math rock of the early 2000s and the more aggressive, industrial-leaning sounds that Hill would later explore in Death Grips. They remain a cult favorite among musicians for their uncompromising approach to rhythmic interplay.
