Intro

Brutal Knights sound like a nervous breakdown happening at 140 beats per minute. It is classic 80s-style hardcore punk stripped of its self-seriousness but none of its speed. The guitars are thin, sharp, and overdriven, creating a wall of static that feels like a live wire sparking in a flooded basement. It is the sound of a band that knows exactly how to play but chooses to make it sound like they are barely holding it together.

What truly sets them apart is the lyrical perspective of Nick Flanagan. Instead of generic political shouting, you get hyper-specific, humorous observations about the indignities of modern life. It is 'smart' punk that doesn't feel academic; it feels like your funniest, most stressed-out friend shouting his problems at you over a loud amplifier. The rhythm section is locked into a frantic, driving gallop that never lets up until the song abruptly ends.

Start with 'Feast of Shame' to hear them at their most cohesive and biting. It captures the essence of the mid-2000s Toronto scene: fast, loud, and deeply skeptical of everything, including itself. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who likes their punk rock with a side of self-deprecating wit.

Brutal Knights are a Canadian punk band formed in 2006 in Toronto, Ontario. Brutal Knights are also known for their humorous lyrics, written by vocalist Nick Flanagan. Brutal Knights, along with Fucked Up, Career Suicide, and Terminal State, were part of a burgeoning hardcore punk scene in Toronto. Flanagan is a comedian, and sometimes performs stand-up at their shows. According to Flanagan, guitarist Jon Sharron writes most of the music. In 2006, they were voted "Best Punk Band" by Toronto's Now Magazine. In 2010, the band has been described as "the most energetic revivalist hardcore act" in Toronto. The Brutal Knights played their final show in December 2010, in Montreal, Quebec.
