Briskey

Briskey is the primary creative vehicle for Belgian musicologist and composer Gert Keunen. Emerging in the early 2000s, the project became a cornerstone of the European nu jazz movement, successfully bridging the gap between the traditional jazz circuit and the electronic lounge scene.

Keunen's approach is characterized by a meticulous synthesis of live instrumentation, featuring top-tier Belgian jazz players, and sophisticated sampling techniques. The project's evolution is marked by a shift from the playful, groove-oriented sounds of 'Cucumber Lodge' (2003) toward a more cinematic, 'post-jazz' aesthetic on 'Before-During-After' (2009). A significant milestone in the artist's career was the formation of the Briskey Big Band in 2007, which reimagined Keunen's electronic-leaning compositions for a 15-piece ensemble, emphasizing the 'fire' and rhythmic intensity of live brass. Critically, Briskey is noted for avoiding the clichés of 'elevator' lounge music by maintaining a dark, pulsing undercurrent and complex arrangements. The project's inclusion on prestigious compilations like 'Saint Germain Des Prés Café' solidified its status as a global representative of the sophisticated Belgian electronic-jazz crossover scene.
