Brimstone

Brimstone occupies a fascinating, almost lonely intersection in the metal landscape. Their sound is defined by a jarring but effective contrast: the soaring, heroic structures of European power metal paired with the subterranean, guttural growls of Swedish death metal. It feels like a battle between light and shadow, where the instrumentation reaches for the sky while the vocals remain rooted in the earth. The production carries that late-90s Swedish warmth, avoiding the sterile digital sheen of modern metal.

What truly distinguishes them is the refusal to compromise on either side of their identity. Most bands would lean into clean singing for such melodic music, but Jan-Erik Persson's performance is uncompromisingly harsh. This creates a unique tension where the music feels uplifting and anthemic, yet the atmosphere remains dangerous and heavy. It is melodic death metal stripped of its gothic tropes and replaced with the galloping spirit of traditional heavy metal.

Start with 'Carving a Crimson Career', the title track of their sole full-length. It perfectly encapsulates their 'power-death' paradox, featuring twin-guitar harmonies and synth textures that would feel at home on a Helloween record, all anchored by a vocal delivery that sounds like it was pulled from a Gothenburg basement show.
