Brainticket

Swirling analog organs and hypnotic grooves that simulate a deep psychedelic trip. Intense, experimental Krautrock for those who want to lose their sense of self.

Intro

Brainticket sounds like the exact moment an LSD trip shifts from colorful visuals to a deep, ego-dissolving mechanical hum. It is a dense thicket of Hammond organ, frantic jazz flute, and early electronic oscillators that create a sense of forward motion that is both exhilarating and slightly terrifying. The music doesn't just play; it vibrates with a primitive, ritualistic energy that feels like it was unearthed from an ancient temple and then plugged into a wall of 1970s amplifiers.

What makes them truly distinctive is their use of non-musical sound sources. Long before industrial music became a genre, Brainticket was incorporating potentiometers and signal generators to create rhythmic noise that mimics the sound of a brain short-circuiting. While their peers in the Krautrock scene focused on spacey jams, Brainticket leaned into the 'bad trip' aesthetic, using repetitive, motorik rhythms and haunting spoken-word passages to create a claustrophobic yet expansive sonic world.

Start with 'Cottonwoodhill' if you want to experience their most infamous and abrasive work, specifically the side-long suite 'Brainticket'. For something slightly more structured but equally mystical, 'Celestial Ocean' offers a concept-driven journey through ancient Egyptian mythology, blending their signature psych-rock with more melodic, progressive elements.

Brainticket was an experimental European band most active in the early 1970s, and known for its use of exotic instruments and jazz-inspired compositions. The only constant member was Belgian musician Joel Vandroogenbroeck until his death in 2019. The band continued to perform concerts and release albums in the 2000s.
