Brainstorm

Formed in 1989 in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, Brainstorm has spent over three decades refining a 'dark' power metal aesthetic. While contemporaries like Helloween or Gamma Ray leaned into speed and light, Brainstorm, led by founding guitarists Torsten Ihlenfeld and Milan Loncaric, prioritized a heavier, more mid-tempo approach influenced by classic US power metal and traditional heavy metal.

The 1999 recruitment of vocalist Andy B. Franck (formerly of Ivanhoe and later Symphorce) was the band's turning point, providing the charismatic and versatile voice needed to elevate their songwriting. Their career arc saw a steady rise through the early 2000s with landmark albums like 'Soul Temptation' and 'Downburst', which solidified their reputation for high-quality production and consistent songwriting. Critically, they are praised for avoiding the 'flower metal' clichés, instead maintaining a somber, often existential lyrical focus. They remain a staple of the European festival circuit, representing the more aggressive, muscular side of the German metal tradition.
