Intro

Bossacucanova sounds like the intersection of a dusty 1960s record crate and a modern Rio de Janeiro nightclub. It is music that feels inherently warm, carrying the gentle, breathy DNA of classic bossa nova, but propelled forward by crisp electronic percussion and playful scratching. The acoustic guitar remains the heartbeat, providing that signature syncopation, while synthesizers and drum machines add a glossy, contemporary sheen that never feels cold or clinical.

What makes them truly distinctive is their lineage and respect for tradition. Formed by the son of bossa nova royalty, the group doesn't just remix old tracks; they treat the genre as a living, breathing organism. They manage to balance the 'saudade' (melancholic longing) of Brazilian music with an upbeat, danceable energy that fits just as well in a high-end lounge as it does on a beach. It is the sound of heritage being updated in real-time without losing its soul.

Start with the album 'Brasilidade' to hear them at their peak of international influence. It perfectly captures their ability to blend live instrumentation with electronic textures. From there, explore 'Revisited Classics' to see how they first bridged the gap between the 1960s and the turn of the millennium, turning timeless melodies into modern chillout anthems.

Bossacucanova is a Brazilian musical group which combines traditional bossa nova with electronica. The group is most notable for having been nominated for a Latin Grammy award in 2002 for Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album for their album Brasilidade. Among the group's permanent members is Márcio Menescal, son of bossa nova pioneer Roberto Menescal, who appeared on the Brasilidade album, DJ Marcelinho DaLua and the record producer and sound engineer Alex Moreira. On stage the group has special guests, female singer Cris Delanno, guitarist Flávio Mendes, saxophone player Rodrigo Sha and percussionist Dado Brother. Alex Moreira (born 1965) died in 2023.
