Borknagar

Borknagar is a cornerstone of the Norwegian progressive metal scene, founded in 1995 by Øystein G. Brun as a melodic reaction to the brutality of his previous band, Molested.

While their self-titled debut was a landmark in folk-influenced black metal, the band rapidly evolved into a sophisticated avant-garde entity. They are famous for their 'supergroup' status, having hosted legendary figures like Garm (Ulver), Ivar Bjørnson (Enslaved), and ICS Vortex. Their sound identity is defined by a unique 'cosmic' perspective, eschewing traditional satanic tropes for lyrics centered on empiricism, philosophy, and the grandeur of the natural world. Musically, they are pioneers of integrating 70s progressive rock elements - such as Hammond organs and complex time signatures - into an extreme metal framework. Critical consensus views them as one of the few bands to successfully bridge the gap between the raw intensity of the second wave of black metal and the refined technicality of modern progressive music. Their later career is marked by a focus on intricate vocal arrangements that have become their primary sonic signature.
