Blue Boy

Dusty soul samples meeting mid-tempo house grooves. It is the sound of a 1960s vocal loop finding a second life on a 1990s dancefloor. Cool, rhythmic, and nostalgic.

Intro

Blue Boy represents that perfect intersection where crate-digging soul obsession meets the steady pulse of 90s house music. The sound is defined by its use of warm, crackling samples that feel like they were pulled directly from a weathered 45rpm record, then polished with a minimalist electronic sheen. It is music that manages to be both danceable and deeply contemplative, carrying the emotional weight of its source material into a modern rhythmic context.

What makes this project distinctive is the surgical precision of the vocal chops. Rather than burying samples in effects, Blue Boy allows the raw grit and soul of the original performance to lead the track. The repetition of specific phrases creates a hypnotic, almost mantra-like quality that sticks in the listener's mind long after the beat stops. It is a masterclass in how to build an entire atmosphere around a single, perfectly chosen moment of musical history.

Start with the iconic 'Remember Me' to hear the definitive blueprint of soulful house. From there, explore the 'Scattered Emotions EP' to hear the more experimental, downtempo side of Lex Blackmore's production. It is essential listening for anyone who loves the jazzy, sampled-based textures of the late 90s UK electronic scene.

Blue Boy (also styled The Blue Boy) is a pseudonym for the Scottish DJ Alexis 'Lex' Blackmore. He is best known for "Remember Me", which peaked at No. 8 in the UK in 1997. Blackmore first worked as a DJ in Glasgow and London, touring with the British electronic group the Shamen in 1991. After working in various guises, Blackmore established the Blue Boy name in 1995 with the single "Sandman" on Ascension Records, followed by the four-track EP, Scattered Emotions. A re-release of "Sandman" in August 1997 reached No. 25 on the UK Singles Chart.
