Blind Illusion

Blind Illusion occupies a singular space in the Bay Area thrash genealogy, founded by Marc Biedermann in 1978. While they shared geography with Metallica and Exodus, Biedermann's vision was always more aligned with the progressive complexity of bands like Rush or King Crimson.

The band is most famous for its 1988 debut, 'The Sane Asylum,' which featured future Primus members Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde. This lineup infused the thrash template with a slap-bass technique and avant-garde guitar textures that were decades ahead of their time. After a long hiatus, the band returned with 'Demon Master' (2010), which leaned harder into 70s hard rock and stoner influences, before returning to a more technical thrash sound on later releases. Critically, they are viewed as a 'musician's band,' prized by collectors of technical thrash and progressive metal for their refusal to adhere to the standard verse-chorus-mosh-part formula. Their influence is felt most strongly in the 'weird' wing of technical metal, connecting the dots between early 80s speed metal and the experimental metal boom of the late 20th century.
