Dramatic piano-led rock with a dark cabaret heart. Orchestral, intense, and uncomfortably intimate music for those who prefer the shadows of the theater.
Birdeatsbaby sounds like a grand, decaying theater brought to life by a lightning strike. It is music that occupies the narrow, fertile ground between the precision of classical composition and the raw, jagged edges of progressive metal. The piano isn't just an accompaniment; it is a percussive, driving force that anchors swirling violins and thunderous drums, creating a soundscape that feels both ancient and dangerously modern.
What truly sets them apart is their 'unhinged' theatricality. While many bands flirt with the dark cabaret aesthetic, Birdeatsbaby leans into the technical complexity of prog-rock and the weight of metal. They swap the whimsical tropes of the genre for something much more visceral and muscular, blending klezmer scales with Tool-inspired polyrhythms and Mishkin Fitzgerald’s commanding, versatile vocals.
Start with 'The World Conspires' to hear their most realized fusion of orchestral beauty and heavy, progressive tension. If you prefer the raw, cabaret-punk energy of their earlier work, 'Feast of Hammers' offers a more frantic, piano-driven entry point into their dark, imaginative world.
Birdeatsbaby is an English progressive rock band from Brighton, United Kingdom, formed in 2008. At their start, the band's music was considered to be within the dark cabaret genre, but later began to incorporate aspects of heavy metal, klezmer and other musical styles. Their music is noted for its orchestral elements, complex rhythms and exotic instrumentation, with lyrics referencing themes such as religion, alienation, sexual orientation, obsession and animal rights. According to group members, their influences include Chopin, Mozart, Debussy, Queen, Muse and Nick Cave. Since the release of their 2016 album Tanta Furia, their influences have also come from progressive metal artists such as Tool and Opeth. Birdeatsbaby has toured throughout the UK, North America and Europe. As of 2020, they have released five studio albums and 20 EPs and singles. The band has previously released music through their own label, Dead Round Eyes Records, and since 2018 have been under the label Dr Music Records.
