Dense, literary rap that feels like a noir novel found in a basement. Gritty production meets sharp, cynical observations on history and the modern world.
Listening to billy woods is like being handed a redacted government document and realizing the black ink tells a better story than the text. His music is thick with atmosphere, often favoring dusty, off-kilter loops and atonal textures that mirror the complexity of his subject matter. It is hip-hop for the patient listener, rewarding those who lean in to catch the subtle internal rhymes and the sharp, often bleak humor tucked into his verses. What truly sets woods apart is his perspective. He avoids the typical tropes of the genre, instead drawing on his unique background to weave together threads of post-colonial history, Marxist theory, and the mundane anxieties of New York life. His delivery is a masterclass in controlled tension; he rarely raises his voice, yet the weight of his words creates an intensity that more aggressive rappers struggle to match. The production, often handled by collaborators like Kenny Segal or Blockhead, provides a murky, cinematic backdrop that feels both timeless and unsettling. For those new to his catalog, Hiding Places is the definitive entry point. It perfectly captures the synergy between his grim, vivid lyricism and Segal's crumbling, guitar-heavy production. From there, Aethiopes offers a more experimental, avant-garde journey into historical trauma and global identity. It is music that demands your full attention and stays with you long after the final track fades out.
