Scrappy, heart-on-sleeve folk with a punk rock backbone. Intimate acoustic arrangements for long drives and quiet realizations.
Billy the Kid (Billy Pettinger) creates music that feels like a confidential conversation held in the back of a touring van. Her sound is rooted in the DIY ethics of punk rock but delivered through the warm, organic textures of indie folk. It is music that prioritizes emotional honesty over studio sheen, often featuring little more than a percussive acoustic guitar and a voice that carries the weight of every mile traveled.
What sets her apart is the restless, prolific nature of her songwriting and her ability to bridge the gap between gritty barroom anthems and delicate chamber folk. Whether she is collaborating with legends like Garth Hudson or punk icons like Frank Turner, the core remains her distinctively raw perspective. There is a sense of constant movement in her work, a nomadic spirit that finds beauty in the struggle of the independent artist.
Start with 'Horseshoes & Hand Grenades' to hear her most polished fusion of folk and rock energy. For a deeper, more personal experience, 'The Lost Cause' captures the early, haunting intimacy that defines her solo identity. It is the perfect soundtrack for those moments when you need to feel grounded but ready to move on.
