Intro

Bill Whelan’s music is the sound of ancient traditions meeting the scale of a modern film score. It is defined by a sense of immense space and rhythmic precision, where the delicate trill of a tin whistle or the mournful cry of uilleann pipes is suddenly met by a wall of symphonic strings and powerful, staccato percussion. It feels both grounded in the earth of Ireland and reaching for the rafters of a grand theater.

What makes Whelan distinctive is his ability to weaponize rhythm. While many Celtic artists lean into the 'misty' or 'ethereal' side of the genre, Whelan’s work - most notably in the Riverdance phenomenon - treats the rhythm of the dance as a primary instrument. The interplay between the choral arrangements of Anúna and the driving, almost tribal percussion creates a tension and release that is uniquely exhilarating.

Start with the original 'Riverdance' soundtrack to experience the peak of the 90s Celtic revival. For a more nuanced, purely musical journey, 'The Connemara Suite' showcases his growth as a serious contemporary composer, blending traditional Irish soloists with the full power of a chamber orchestra.

William Michael Joseph 'Bill' Whelan (born 22 May 1950) is an Irish composer and musician. He is best known for composing a piece for the interval of the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. The result, "Riverdance", was a seven-minute piece of original music accompanying a new take on traditional Irish stepdance that became a full-length stage production and spawned a worldwide craze for Irish traditional music and dance. The corresponding soundtrack album earned him a Grammy. "Riverdance" was released as a single in 1994, credited to "Bill Whelan and Anúna featuring the RTÉ Concert Orchestra". It reached number one in Ireland for 18 weeks and number nine in the UK. The album of the same title reached number 31 in the album charts in 1995. Whelan has also arranged a symphonic suite version of Riverdance, with its premiere performed by the Ulster Orchestra on BBC Radio 3 in August 2014. A studio recording was released on CD (on the RTÉ lyric fm label) in 2018. Whelan is second cousin to British-Irish comedian, Jimmy Carr.
