Intro

Bembeya Jazz National sounds like the heartbeat of a nation in bloom. It is a rich, widescreen experience where traditional West African griot storytelling is reimagined through the lens of a sophisticated big band. The music is anchored by the legendary 'Diamond Fingers' Diabaté, whose electric guitar work flows like water, weaving intricate, shimmering patterns around a powerful horn section that carries the rhythmic swing of Havana.

What makes them distinctive is the sheer scale of their sound. Unlike the stripped-back folk of their contemporaries, Bembeya was a state-sponsored powerhouse, resulting in recordings that feel cinematic and monumental. They possess a unique ability to transition from a delicate, hypnotic guitar solo into a triumphant, brass-led crescendo without losing their deep, soulful groove. It is music that is simultaneously intellectually complex and physically irresistible.

Start with '10 ans de succès' to hear them at their live peak. It captures the raw energy and telepathic communication of the band in front of a home crowd. For a deeper dive into their storytelling prowess, the epic 'Regard sur le passé' showcases how they transformed Guinean history into a modern musical masterpiece.

Bembeya Jazz National (originally known as Orchestre de Beyla) is a Guinean music group that gained fame in the 1960s for their Afropop rhythms. They are considered one of the most significant bands in Guinean music. Many of their recordings are based on traditional folk music from the country and have been fused with Cuban, jazz and Afropop styles. Featuring guitarist Sekou "Diamond Fingers" Diabaté, who grew up in a traditional griot musical family, the band won over fans in Conakry, Guinea's capital city, during the heady days of that country's newfound independence. Bembeya Jazz fell onto harder times in the 1980s and disbanded for a number of years, but reformed in the late 1990s and toured Europe and North America in the early 2000s.
