Beatenberg

Bright, crystalline guitars meeting intricate South African rhythms. It is intellectual pop that feels like a long, warm afternoon by the water.

Intro

Beatenberg sounds like the intersection of a high-end jazz education and a deep love for the infectious rhythms of South African radio. Their music is defined by a 'clean' aesthetic: the guitars are bright and pluck-heavy, the drums are precisely syncopated, and the vocals are delivered with a calm, almost conversational ease. It is music that feels airy and spacious, yet it is underpinned by a rigorous musicality that rewards close listening.

What makes them truly distinctive is how they marry 'serious' harmonic structures, influenced by Debussy and Coltrane, with the effortless bounce of Mbaqanga and Kwela. There is a polite, almost scholarly wit to their lyrics, often referencing art, geography, and literature without ever feeling heavy-handed. They manage to be both sophisticated and completely accessible, creating a sound that is as much about the intellect as it is about the groove.

Start with 'The Hanging Gardens of Beatenberg' to hear the band at their most iconic. Tracks like 'Rafael' and 'Beauty Like a Tightened Bow' perfectly showcase their ability to turn complex rhythmic ideas into breezy, unforgettable pop hooks that linger long after the song ends.

Beatenberg is a South African band based in Cape Town, composed of Matthew Field (born 02.05.1989), Robin Brink, and Ross Dorkin. The group signed with Universal Music Group label in 2012. Their third album 12 Views of Beatenberg (2018), after the release of singles "Camera", "Ode to the Berg Wind" and "Aphrodite", in collaboration with the singer Tresor.
