Intro

BEAM sounds like the future of the Atlantic crossing. It is a razor-sharp collision between the heavy, digital thump of Atlanta trap and the syncopated, rhythmic urgency of Kingston dancehall. The production is often cavernous and cold, filled with metallic textures and bass that feels like it’s being pushed through a liquid filter. His voice acts as a versatile lead instrument, switching between melodic crooning and rapid-fire, patois-inflected bars that cut through the mix with surgical precision.

What truly sets him apart is his pedigree as a producer. Unlike many rappers who simply select beats, BEAM constructs entire sonic environments. There is a meticulousness to his sound, a sense that every hi-hat and vocal chop has been placed with intentionality. He avoids the generic tropes of modern rap by leaning into his Jamaican heritage, using those traditional rhythms to disrupt the standard 4/4 predictability of trap music.

Start with the album '95' for a masterclass in his versatility. It showcases his ability to bridge the gap between gospel-influenced soul and hard-hitting club anthems. If you want something more experimental and expansive, 'ALIEN' pushes his sound into even more psychedelic and collaborative territories, proving he can hold his own alongside the biggest names in pop and R&B.

Tyshane Thompson (born 1995), known professionally as Beam (an acronym for Be Everything and More; stylised in all caps; formerly as Tyshane and Elite), is a Jamaican-born American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is the son of dancehall and gospel reggae singer Papa San. He was one-half of the production duo 808&Elite. Beam released his debut studio album, Alien, on February 4, 2022. It includes collaborations with Justin Bieber, Jorja Smith, and his father, among others.
