Bauer

Lush, meticulously arranged chamber pop that feels like a lost 1960s film score. Sophisticated melodies wrapped in warm orchestral textures and analog synths.

Intro

Bauer creates a world that feels both deeply familiar and entirely imagined. It is the sound of high-fidelity nostalgia, where the ghost of Burt Bacharach meets the experimental curiosity of Stereolab. The music is defined by its elegance, utilizing sweeping string sections, precise woodwinds, and a rhythmic sensibility that betrays Berend Dubbe's history as a drummer while remaining firmly in the realm of sophisticated pop.

What sets Bauer apart is the obsessive attention to detail in the arrangements. This isn't just indie rock with a few violins added; it is true orchestral pop where the instruments converse with one another. There is a playful, almost cinematic quality to the songwriting, often leaning into lounge-inflected textures and mid-century modern aesthetics without ever feeling like a hollow parody.

Start with 'Baueresque' to hear the project at its most collaborative and lushly realized. It serves as a perfect gateway into their blend of baroque sensibilities and modern indie-pop charm. For a more expansive, cinematic experience, 'Eyes Fully Open' showcases the project's later evolution into grander, more singular territory.

Bauer is a band founded in 1999 by former Bettie Serveert drummer Berend Dubbe and based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. To support the debut Bauer album with live shows, Dubbe formed a live band and with member Sonja van Hamel, Bauer was presented as a pop-duo from 2000-2006. Together, they released three records. In 2000, Bauer won a Zilveren Harp (Silver Harp) awarded by Dutch organization BUMA/STEMRA. What began as electropop on earlier albums developed over time into orchestral pop. In 2016, a new Bauer album was released, Eyes Fully Open. Like 1999's On the Move, it is a solo album (Dubbe). It is the first Bauer album released on Basta Music (previously the band was signed to Excelsior Recordings Partners in Crime, and Wabana).
