BAMBII

High-velocity club music where dancehall riddims collide with jungle breaks. Intense, queer-coded rave energy that feels like a physical jolt to the system.

Intro

BAMBII creates music that feels like a high-speed chase through a global metropolis. It is a dense, exhilarating collision of sounds where the rhythmic DNA of the Caribbean is re-sequenced through the lens of modern rave culture. The energy is relentless, characterized by sharp, metallic percussion and sub-bass that feels heavy enough to alter your heart rate. It is music that demands movement, operating at the intersection of sweat-soaked basement parties and high-concept art spaces.

What truly distinguishes her sound is the way she treats the 'club' as a fluid, borderless space. You might hear a classic dancehall vocal chopped into a rhythmic stutter, layered over a frantic jungle breakbeat, only to have it dissolve into a sleek, futuristic synth line. There is a specific tension in her work between the raw, organic energy of the dancefloor and a highly polished, digital maximalism. It is a sonic representation of the multicultural Toronto scene she emerged from, filtered through a queer, forward-thinking aesthetic.

For those new to her catalog, the Infinity Club EP is the essential starting point. It serves as a manifesto for her 'global club' philosophy, moving seamlessly from the aggressive swagger of 'Wicked Gyal' to more melodic, atmospheric explorations. It is the sound of an artist who knows exactly how to manipulate the energy of a room, whether she is behind the decks or in the producer's chair.

Kirsten Azan, known professionally as BAMBII, is a Jamaican-Canadian DJ/producer, based in Toronto. She rose to popularity through the Toronto nightclub scene. In June 2023 she performed at Melbourne's Rising arts festival. Around that time, Pitchfork characterized her as "a queer club innovator whose exhilarating, rave-ready songs exist at the crossroads of jungle, dancehall, drum’n’bass, and UK garage." Infinity Club was released on August 4, 2023. The release was rated four out of five stars by NME, and was a shortlisted nominee for the 2024 Polaris Music Prize. The EP also won the Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2024.
