Babylon Circus

Raucous French ska-punk that feels like a traveling carnival crashed a protest. High-energy brass and multilingual anthems for the restless and the rebellious.

Intro

Babylon Circus sounds like a riotous intersection of a Parisian street market and a high-stakes circus tent. Their music is a dense, organic tapestry of skanking guitars, punchy brass stabs, and a rhythm section that swings between heavy reggae grooves and frantic punk tempos. It is music that feels physically large, occupying every corner of the room with the kinetic energy of ten musicians playing in perfect, chaotic sync.

What truly sets them apart is their 'chanson' sensibility applied to global rhythms. They don't just play ska; they weave in elements of swing, jazz, and Eastern European folk, all while maintaining a sharp lyrical edge. The vocal interplay between French and English creates a nomadic, borderless atmosphere that mirrors their extensive global touring history. It is sophisticated in its arrangement but raw in its delivery.

Start with 'Dances of Resistance' to hear them at their most politically potent and musically diverse. It captures the essence of their 'circus' moniker: a spectacle that is entertaining on the surface but carries a deep, resonant message beneath the brass fanfares and upbeat tempos.

Babylon Circus is a nine-piece ska and reggae group founded in 1995 in Lyon, France. Since forming, they have released six full - length albums and one EP. They have played over 1500 shows throughout Europe, and have toured as far as Syria, Australia and South Africa The band began as a ska group but quickly transcended the genre, mixing punk, reggae, rock, swing and jazz influences. They sing in both French and English, sometimes mixing the two in songs. Their third album, Dances of Resistance, was recorded in 2003 and largely has an anti-war theme. In 2009 they launched the album La Belle Étoile followed by Never Stop in 2013. They are still on tour all over the world, from their own country France to other countries in Europe, but also to foreign places like Abu Dhabi and New Zealand.
