Intro

B12 creates a sound that is simultaneously high-tech and deeply human. It is the sound of the future as imagined in 1993: sleek, metallic, yet filled with a profound sense of longing. Their music operates in the fertile ground between the dancefloor and the armchair, utilizing the rhythmic language of Detroit techno but slowing it down and wrapping it in layers of lush, cinematic atmosphere.

What sets them apart is their commitment to a specific science fiction aesthetic. While many of their contemporaries in the early IDM scene moved toward glitchy abstraction, B12 maintained a focus on melody and mood. Their tracks often feature 'crystalline' synth leads and warm, sweeping pads that evoke the loneliness of space travel or the quiet hum of a futuristic metropolis at 4 AM.

To understand their legacy, start with Electro-Soma. It is a foundational text of the UK's 'Artificial Intelligence' era, showcasing how electronic music could be sophisticated, emotive, and narrative-driven without the need for words. It is essential listening for anyone who finds beauty in the intersection of machines and emotion.

B12 are a British electronic music duo consisting of Mike Golding and Steve Rutter. First appearing in the early 1990s under a variety of monikers, including Musicology, Redcell and Cmetric, their sound is associated with the early 1990s ambient techno and IDM scene. They released their debut album Electro-Soma (1993) on Warp Records, and also founded the independent label B12 Records. Recurring themes of science fiction and futurism can be found in nearly all B12 releases.
