B-Tribe

Sultry Spanish guitar meets heavy trip-hop beats and orchestral cellos. A moody, Mediterranean take on downtempo that feels like a midnight walk in Barcelona.

Intro

B-Tribe creates a sound that is simultaneously earthy and ethereal, grounding the listener with the tactile snap of flamenco guitar while drifting away on clouds of synthesizer and reverb. It is the sound of the Mediterranean after dark, where the heat of the day still radiates from stone walls but the air has turned cool and mysterious. The interplay between Paco Fernandez's masterful nylon-string guitar work and the deep, steady pulse of 90s-era breakbeats creates a unique tension that is both relaxing and deeply engaging.

What sets them apart is the 'noir' quality they bring to the world-fusion genre. While many of their contemporaries in the 90s new age scene went for bright, sunny optimism, B-Tribe leaned into the shadows. The addition of melancholic cello lines from the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra adds a layer of European classical weight to the hip-hop influenced rhythms, making the music feel more like a film score for a lost romantic tragedy than a standard chillout compilation.

To understand their evolution, start with 'Suave Suave' for the definitive balance of rhythm and atmosphere. If you prefer something more introspective and stripped-back, 'Spiritual Spiritual' removes much of the percussion to focus on the haunting beauty of the guitar and cello. It is perfect music for those moments when you want to feel the world slowing down without losing a sense of sophisticated edge.

B-Tribe, or The Barcelona Tribe of Soulsters, is a musical project of the German-born musicians and producers Claus Zundel, Markus Staab [† 22.09.2024] and Ralf Hamm ("The Brave"), who are also known for their Sacred Spirit project. Driven by the use of classical Spanish guitar and other elements of flamenco music, mixed with trip hop-like ambient tunes. All the albums were recorded in Zundels's own studio on Ibiza, Spain. Spanish musician Paco Fernandez plays guitars and cello parts are performed by Frankfurt Radio Orchestra member Eric Plummetaz. Singer Deborah Blando has also collaborated.
