Audience of One

Audience of One is a pivotal, if brief, chapter in the history of the Philadelphia emo and post-hardcore scene. Formed in the late 1990s as a high school project featuring a young Anthony Green, the band serves as the primary aesthetic bridge between the midwest emo sound of the 90s (Sunny Day Real Estate, The Promise Ring) and the more aggressive, melodic post-hardcore that Green would later pioneer with Saosin and Circa Survive.

Their 1999 debut, 'I Remember When This All Meant Something,' was released on Break Even Records, a local non-profit label that epitomized the DIY ethos of the era. Sonically, the band is characterized by clean, intertwining guitar melodies, a driving but unpolished rhythm section, and Green's signature high-register vocals, which at this stage were more grounded and 'indie' than his later operatic style. Critically, the band is viewed as a 'holy grail' for emo historians and Green completists, representing a moment of pure, uncommercialized creative expression before the genre's mainstream boom. Their influence is felt in the 'revivalist' emo movement of the 2010s, which sought to recapture the exact lo-fi, earnest suburban atmosphere that Audience of One naturally inhabited.
