Atomic

Atomic is a seminal Norwegian-Swedish jazz quintet formed in 1999, representing a bridge between the American free jazz tradition and the European avant-garde. The original lineup featured a 'supergroup' of Scandinavian talent, including Paal Nilssen-Love and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, both known for their work in the powerhouse trio The Thing.

Their sound identity is defined by a rigorous adherence to complex, pre-composed structures that serve as launchpads for high-energy, 'atomic' improvisation. Throughout their career, they have moved away from the more traditional post-bop influences of their debut, 'Feet Music', toward a more abstract, chamber-influenced sound seen in later works like 'Pet Variations'. They occupy a central position in the 'New Thing' of European jazz, often associated with the Rune Grammofon and Jazzland labels.
