Eclectic Colombian rock that weaves bolero, punk, and electronics into a vibrant tapestry. Socially conscious anthems with a velvety, soulful edge.
Aterciopelados sounds like a conversation between the ancient and the modern. It is music that feels deeply rooted in the soil of Bogotá while reaching for the stars of global electronica. Andrea Echeverri’s vocals are the centerpiece: they are breathy, intimate, and possess a unique 'velvety' texture that can shift from a gentle whisper to a sharp, punk-inflected edge in a single verse. The instrumentation is a restless mix of distorted guitars, traditional Latin percussion, and shimmering synthesizers.
What makes them truly distinctive is their ability to inhabit multiple worlds at once. They are one of the few bands that can credibly deliver a heavy punk track and a traditional bolero on the same record without losing their identity. Their work is defined by a fierce social consciousness, particularly regarding environmentalism and women's rights, but it is never preachy. Instead, it feels like a personal, lived-in philosophy expressed through infectious grooves and sophisticated pop arrangements.
Start with the album 'El Dorado' to hear the definitive birth of their signature rock-bolero sound. It contains 'Bolero Falaz,' the track that redefined Colombian rock for a generation. If you prefer something more atmospheric and electronic, 'Caribe Atómico' offers a fascinating, murkier exploration of their sound, perfect for late-night listening.
