Assassin

Aggressive, uncompromising Parisian rap that hits like a brick through a window. Militant lyrics meet gritty, sample-heavy boom bap for the politically restless.

Intro

This is the sound of the Parisian underground before it was polished for the charts. It is dense, intellectual, and deeply confrontational music that refuses to compromise its message for a hook. The production is rooted in the golden era of sampling, featuring dusty loops, sharp snares, and a sense of looming urban tension that feels both historical and immediate.

What sets them apart is the sheer weight of the ideology. Rockin' Squat delivers verses with the precision of a lecturer and the fire of a revolutionary, dissecting social inequality and the pitfalls of commercialism. It is hip-hop as a tool for elevation, heavily influenced by the militant consciousness of US acts like Public Enemy but translated into a uniquely French sociological context.

Start with their 90s output to hear the foundation of French hardcore rap. It is essential listening for anyone who wants to understand how hip-hop became a vital political force in Europe, offering a raw alternative to the more melodic or pop-leaning sounds that followed.

Assassin is a French hardcore rap group formed in the 18th municipal district (arrondissement municipal) of Paris. The group was formed in 1985 by Rockin' Squat and Solo. Later, Doctor L joined them, as well as DJ Clyde. The group had a significant presence on the French underground music scene in the 1980s and 1990s, with lyrics referencing social inequalities and denouncing commercialism. Rockin' Squat is Mathias Crochon, Jean-Pierre Cassel's son and brother of Vincent Cassel. He has tried for more than 15 years to elevate the mind of the ghetto, similar to KRS-One, Immortal Technique, and Chuck D in the US. The group undertook national tours in France in the 1990s.
