Aorlhac

Aorlhac is a cornerstone of the modern French black metal scene, specifically the 'Occitan' movement that focuses on the history and heritage of Southern France. Formed in 2007, they established a 'Wind Trilogy' (A la croisée des vents, La Cité des vents, and L’Esprit des vents) that defined their sound: a high-energy blend of melodic black metal and folk sensibilities.

Unlike the 'Orthodox' black metal movement which focuses on religious or nihilistic themes, Aorlhac utilizes the genre's intensity to explore medieval history, local legends, and the rugged landscapes of the Auvergne region. Their sound is characterized by Necrosis's distinctive guitar work, which utilizes major-key inflections and folk-like melodies within a traditional black metal framework. Critically, they are praised for their ability to maintain extreme speed while delivering memorable, anthemic hooks. They occupy a similar cultural space to bands like Sühnopfer and Véhémence, prioritizing historical authenticity and melodic complexity over lo-fi aesthetics.
