Intro

Anupam Roy creates a sound that is fundamentally intimate, built around the warm resonance of an acoustic guitar and a vocal style that feels like someone whispering a secret. His music bridges the gap between traditional Bengali melodic sensibilities and modern indie-folk, resulting in songs that are as intellectually stimulating as they are emotionally resonant. There is a persistent sense of 'biraha' or longing that permeates his work, often grounded in the specific textures of urban life in Kolkata.

What makes him distinctive is his lyrical depth; he writes with the precision of a poet, focusing on the small, often overlooked moments of human connection and existential doubt. His arrangements are tasteful and never overcrowded, allowing the breathiness of his voice and the clarity of his storytelling to take center stage. It is music that demands a certain level of quietude from the listener to fully appreciate the nuances of the production.

To understand his impact, start with his breakout hit 'Amake Amar Moto Thakte Dao' to hear the blueprint of his sound. From there, explore the 'Piku' soundtrack for a more polished, cinematic take on his folk-pop style, or 'Durbine Chokh Rakhbo Na' for his more experimental singer-songwriter roots.

Anupam Roy (born 29 March 1982) is an Indian Bengali singer-songwriter, music director, composer, writer, guitarist, playback singer, engineer from Kolkata, India. He made his debut with Amake Amar Moto Thakte Dao & Benche Thakar Gaan, which appeared on the soundtrack of the 2010 Bengali film Autograph. Since then, he has gone on to compose, write lyrics and sing for many Bengali films. In 2015, he made his Bollywood debut, composing the songs and score for Piku. He was nominated for the 61st Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, and won the 61st Filmfare Award for Best Background Score for Piku. Winner of four Filmfare Awards, he is also a recipient of 64th National Film Award for Best Lyrics for the song Tumi Jaake Bhalobasho.
