Antimatter began in 1998 as a collaborative project between Mick Moss and Duncan Patterson, the latter of whom had just departed the legendary doom/progressive band Anathema. This pedigree initially linked the band to the 'post-doom' movement, but Antimatter quickly carved out a unique niche by stripping away metal's aggression in favor of dark ambient, trip-hop, and melodic rock.
The early 'Patterson era' (1998-2005) was defined by a minimalist, often electronic approach featuring prominent female guest vocals and a bleak, skeletal aesthetic. Following Patterson's departure, Mick Moss took full creative control, steering the project toward a more robust art rock sound. This transition saw the integration of more traditional rock instrumentation, including soaring lead guitars and complex drumming, while maintaining the core identity of existential dread and melodic beauty. Critically, the band is praised for its consistency and Moss's ability to tackle heavy themes of betrayal, identity, and social alienation without falling into cliché. They occupy a cultural space similar to Porcupine Tree or Katatonia, serving as a bridge between the progressive rock and gothic communities.
