High-voltage rock that strips away the prog-excess for something leaner and meaner. Jittery, virtuosic, and relentlessly catchy garage-prog for restless minds.
Antemasque sounds like a high-speed chase through a neon-lit alleyway. It captures the frantic, nervous energy of post-hardcore but filters it through a 1970s garage rock lens, resulting in songs that feel both vintage and futuristic. The rhythm section is the star here, providing a hyper-kinetic foundation that allows the guitars to slash and the vocals to soar. It is music that refuses to sit still, characterized by sharp corners and sudden bursts of melodic sunshine.
What makes this project distinctive is the restraint shown by its legendary members. While their previous work favored sprawling, twenty-minute epics, Antemasque focuses on the three-minute gut punch. You still get the complex time signatures and the surrealist lyrics, but they are delivered with a punchy, dry production that emphasizes the physical act of playing. It is the sound of world-class musicians rediscovering the simple joy of a loud amplifier and a fast beat.
Start with their self-titled debut album. It is a masterclass in how to be technically proficient without being pretentious. Tracks like '4AM' and 'In the Lurch' provide the perfect entry point, showcasing the band's ability to marry jagged, math-rock precision with hooks that will stay stuck in your head for days.
Antemasque was an American rock supergroup formed in 2014 by former members of At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta, Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala. Their first album featured Red Hot Chili Peppers's Flea on bass and Dave Elitch on drums. Both Flea and Elitch had previously played with The Mars Volta. Omar's brother Marfred Rodríguez-López (formerly of Zechs Marquise) eventually joined as a permanent bassist with Blink-182 member Travis Barker taking over drumming duties.
