Anna Meredith

High-velocity synth patterns colliding with orchestral muscle. It sounds like a classical composer hijacked a rave to build something bright, loud, and intricate.

Intro

Anna Meredith creates music that feels like a physical object in motion. It is bright, sharp, and relentlessly rhythmic, occupying a unique space where the rigor of contemporary classical composition meets the visceral energy of experimental pop. Her tracks often build from small, interlocking patterns into towering walls of sound that feel both meticulously engineered and wildly exuberant.

What sets her apart is her use of acoustic 'classical' instruments, particularly brass and strings, not as background texture but as primary rhythmic drivers. She treats a tuba or a cello with the same aggressive, percussive intent as a drum machine. The result is a 'maximalist' aesthetic that avoids clutter, instead opting for a crystalline clarity where every beep, honk, and beat has a specific, high-stakes purpose.

For those new to her world, the album Varmints is the essential entry point. It perfectly captures her ability to pivot from delicate, shimmering synth-work to heavy, distorted anthems. It is music for people who want their art to be intellectually stimulating but also loud enough to rattle the windows.
