Angels & Airwaves

Angels & Airwaves (AVA) represents the ambitious evolution of Tom DeLonge, moving away from the pop-punk constraints of Blink-182 toward a multimedia 'art project.' Formed in 2005, the band's sound is characterized by heavy use of the Roland DD-3 digital delay, U2-inspired stadium rock textures, and 1980s synth-pop influences.

Their debut, 'We Don't Need to Whisper,' established a 'space rock' identity that the band would expand upon through feature films (Love), animated shorts (Poet Anderson), and graphic novels. Musically, the project is a bridge between the melodic accessibility of the San Diego punk scene and the progressive tendencies of neo-prog. Critical consensus often highlights the band's earnestness and high production values, though some critics initially balked at DeLonge's grandiose marketing. Over time, the project has earned a dedicated cult following for its consistent world-building and its role in pioneering the 'multimedia' approach to band branding. The inclusion of Ilan Rubin (Nine Inch Nails) in later years brought a more sophisticated, multi-instrumental edge to the arrangements, particularly on 'The Dream Walker' and 'Lifeforms.'
