Intro

Aneka offers a fascinating snapshot of the early 1980s transition from disco to synth-pop. The music is characterized by its bright, shimmering electronic textures and rigid, infectious drum machine rhythms that define the post-disco era. Underneath the glossy production lies a vocal sophistication rarely found in bubblegum pop, owing to Mary Sandeman's background in traditional music.

What truly distinguishes the sound is the juxtaposition of high-concept, almost theatrical aesthetics with genuine vocal talent. While the arrangements lean into the 'orientalism' trends of the early 80s, the melodic construction is remarkably sturdy, utilizing catchy pentatonic hooks and lush, analog synthesizer pads that create a sense of wide-eyed wonder and kitschy charm.

Start with the global hit 'Japanese Boy' to hear the quintessential 80s pop formula at its peak. From there, explore her self-titled album to hear how her mezzo-soprano voice navigates the shift between electronic dance tracks and more traditional, melodic storytelling.

Mary Sandeman (born 20 November 1947), better known by her former stage name Aneka ( ə-NEE-kə), is a retired Scottish traditional singer. In 1981, she reached number one in the UK Singles Chart with her song "Japanese Boy". She was well known for the Oriental image she took on for the song. After her brief foray into pop, she reverted to her real name and reestablished herself as an accomplished performer of Scottish traditional music.
