Sun-soaked melodies and velvet vocals that define the golden age of AM radio. Pure, unadulterated pop optimism for long drives and slow summer afternoons.
Andy Kim’s music is the sonic equivalent of a faded Polaroid from a 1970s beach vacation. It is built on a foundation of warm acoustic guitars, rhythmic handclaps, and a baritone voice that feels both intimate and expansive. There is an unmistakable 'glow' to the production, reminiscent of the Brill Building era but filtered through the mellow, easy-going lens of the early seventies. It is music that prioritizes melody above all else, creating an atmosphere of effortless charm.
What distinguishes Kim from his bubblegum contemporaries is the genuine soulfulness beneath the sugary surface. While he co-wrote the ultimate pop confection 'Sugar, Sugar,' his solo work often carries a more mature, soft-rock sensibility. His vocal delivery is smooth and controlled, avoiding the frantic energy of teen-pop for something more grounded and romantic. The arrangements often feature lush string sections or subtle orchestral flourishes that elevate the simple song structures into something more enduring.
For the uninitiated, 'Rock Me Gently' is the essential starting point, perfectly capturing his ability to blend a driving rhythm with a soaring, romantic chorus. From there, his 1969 cover of 'Baby, I Love You' showcases his knack for reimagining classic pop tropes with a modern, slightly more muscular production style. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone seeking a hit of pure, melodic dopamine.
