Gritty, high-voltage soul delivered with a voice like crushed velvet and gravel. It is the sound of a 1960s Memphis revue filtered through a 1990s Dublin pub.
Andrew Strong possesses a voice that sounds like it has been cured in tobacco smoke and whiskey since the womb. It is a massive, tectonic instrument that leans heavily into the traditions of Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett, delivering every line with a ferocious, sweat-soaked conviction that feels increasingly rare in modern pop. While his music is technically polished, it never loses that essential 'live' friction that suggests a band playing in a packed, humid room.
What truly sets him apart is the sheer physicality of his performance. He doesn't just sing soul; he wrestles with it. His phrasing is punctuated by guttural growls and sudden, soaring belts that bypass the brain and go straight for the gut. It's blue-eyed soul with a jagged edge, stripping away the politeness of the genre to find the raw, rhythmic heart underneath.
Start with the 'The Commitments' soundtrack to hear the lightning-in-a-bottle energy that launched his career, then move to 'Strong' or 'Gypsy's Kiss' to hear how that massive voice matured into a more nuanced, blues-rock context. It is essential listening for anyone who thinks soul music should be felt in the chest cavity.
